 SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER

 

 

POSITION SUMMARY

 

Reporting to the Assistant Director, Residential (CSM), and the Special Education Teacher is responsible for providing direct instruction to children attending CSM locations. 

The Special Education Teacher is also responsible for the management, development and performance of Teaching Assistants.

 

 
QUALIFICATIONS

Education:             Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, Must meet state certification requirements appropriate to the teaching assignment, either conditionally or provisionally certified.

 

Experience:          Minimum five (5) years’ experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities in an instructional setting.  Previous supervisory experience preferred.

 

Skills:                   Must possess strong written and oral communication skills, as well as good organizational and coordinative ability.  Must possess and demonstrate strong interpersonal skills with the ability to exercise patience, caring and concern in new and sometimes stressful situations.    Computer literacy required, with a proficiency in standard business software applications (i.e., word processing, e-mail and spreadsheets).

 

 
NATURE AND SCOPE

 

Program Management:

 

·         Develops classroom instructional program; plans and implements daily classroom schedule.   Orders, purchases, or makes instructional materials; maintains classroom data and records.

 

·         Coordinates implementation of the Individualized Program for each student.   Ensures implementation of the Individualized Education Program (IEP). Ensures implementation of behavioral program for each student.  Monitors the instructional and behavioral program in the residences.  Completes the educational assessment of students.

 

·         Chairs monthly case conferences with the Instructional Review Team.  Confers with the Teacher Assistants and Residential Instructors on the current status of individual student’s instructional plan.  Reviews student’s education progress and ensures coordination of the instructional plans in the classroom, the community, and the residences.

 

·         Participates in weekly classroom staff meeting to coordinate classroom and community activities schedule; shares relevant information amongst all staff and to train staff in policies procedures, and other school and agency matters.

 

·         Participates in weekly consultations with psychologist to monitor behavioral program implementation. 

 

·         After receiving Medication Administration certification, oversees the administration of medication in the classroom; monitors the charting of medication administered.  Supervises the safe handling of medication and ensures that appropriate quantities of prescribed medication are available.

 

·         Collects, compiles, and submits monthly progress reports by the 15th of the following month.

 

·         Maintain files and records and ensure that Teacher Assistants are completing all necessary forms.

·         Serve as a member of the interdisciplinary team for each student.

·         

·         Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate Teacher Assistants. Trains the Teacher Assistants on implementation of the IEP and behavioral programs, ensuring the initiation of goals and behavioral programs on time.

·         

·         Monitor transportation of students, in consultation with the agency’s transportation coordinator and school residential coordinator.

Staff Management and Development:

 

·         Responsible for the selection, retention and development of subordinate staff in the IEI department, (i.e. IEI Technicians and Senior Technicians).  Identifies knowledge, skills and abilities needed to perform these roles, participates in the recruitment process for new and replacement hires.

 

·         Provides leadership, mentoring and motivations to staff to ensure the creation of the optimum environment to support individuals served by CSAAC.

 

·         Ensures staff members complete required training within timeframes prescribed by CSAAC.

 

·         Conducts annual performance evaluations, make salary recommendations as appropriate.

 

·         Confers with human resources to effect any disciplinary measures as required.

 

 

 

REQUIRED TRAINING/PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATIONS

 

·         Currency of Maryland State teaching certification.

 

·         Completion and demonstration of techniques taught in the Behavioral Principles and Strategies Training (BPST).

 

·         Successfully complete annual recertification of the BPST.

 

 

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, and use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

 

Employee must be able to effectively complete a non-adverse physical intervention with autistic individuals of varying heights, weights and levels of physical strength according to the guidelines presented in Behavioral Principles and Strategies training.
