Job Description:

    Introduction
The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking a Communications Countermeasures Engineer.
    Responsibilities
Participate in development of new communications jamming systems and jamming waveform optimization of deployed countermeasures systems, with particular focus on countering radio controlled improvised explosive devices (RCIED).  Investigate digital signal processing (DSP) elements of counter-RCIED jamming systems.  Test and evaluate digital communications systems in an electronic countermeasures environment.  Perform analysis and characterization of RCIED-related communication systems.  Assess and test communications systems interactions with and vulnerabilities to countermeasures waveforms.

Duties include:
1) Perform systems analysis and systems engineering related to the optimization of performance of current communication jamming systems and development of next-generation communication jamming systems, with heavy focus on developing "one-on-many" jamming loadsets to counter RCIED threats to deployed forces.  Perform test and evaluation of communications systems and countermeasures in laboratory and field environments.  Participate in testing and analyze test results.
2) Analyze and characterize RCIED-related communication systems in a laboratory environment.  Develop and quantify the effectiveness of countermeasures waveforms against said communication systems. Identify potential jamming waveforms that can exploit communication system vulnerabilities.
3) Document and present results of analyses and testing to peers, sponsors, and industry organizations.
    Qualifications
    Required:
BS or equivalent experience in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Mathematics.
Five to 10 years experience with modern digital communications systems or an equivalent technology.
Understanding of basic wireless communications systems components and operation.  Understanding of basic RF communication receivers, including demodulation and signal processing techniques.
Understanding of link budgets.
Experience with basic electronics laboratory equipment and procedures.
Ability to work as a member of a team and communicate technical results in written and oral formats.

Desired:
MS in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Mathematics, with experience in digital signal processing and RF communications systems networking protocols and standards.
Experience with communications jamming systems.
Basic understanding of communication systems standards and protocols.
Understanding of RF propagation, communications receivers and system architectures, statistical elements of detection of signals in interference.
    Special Work Conditions
Laboratory and field testing of RF systems. Some travel required to support field testing at remote locations.
    Security
Applicants selected will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified information.  Eligibility requirements include US citizenship.
    Benefits
APL offers a comprehensive benefits package including a liberal vacation plan, a matching retirement program, significant educational assistance, a scholarship tuition program for staff with dependents, and competitive salaries commensurate with skills and experience.
    How To Apply

    Equal Employment Opportunity
Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer that complies with Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972, as well as other applicable laws, and values diversity in its workforce.
