Job Summary:
Minimum Qualifications:
High school graduation or an equivalent combination of training and experience is necessary.
Two years of experience as a protective services officer, internally, or within federal, state, military or municipality is necessary.
Possession of a District of Columbia Special Police Commission, or the ability to obtain a commission within 120 days or employment is necessary.
Successful completion of physical, drug screening and mental examination, which has been approved by the University Police Department, is necessary.
Must have a valid driver's license and be eligible to drive GW vehicles as per University Policy.
Must be a U.S. citizen, at least 21 years of age.
Must be available to work rotating shifts.
Desired Qualifications:
Bachelors Degree Preferred.
Working Conditions:
The incumbent generally performs job duties outside and will be exposed to the elements. This includes walking or driving in inclement weather. The job includes completing training which requires a significant level of physical activity. The incumbent may be required to work at a fixed post which will require them to remain alert.

Function:
Trains new officers in the field-training program during the officers' initial probation period. Provides superiors with regular status reports/summaries related to the training or the new officers
Provides security and protective services to the University community, by patrolling assigned areas or buildings to enforce D.C. laws and GW administrative ordinances, which may include security of individual building/stationary locations.
Responds to emergencies by assessing the situation, employing tact diplomacy and individual judgment in order to remedy and/or maintain control; many situations will require the incumbent to provide on-site lead supervision over lower level Officers that may be present.
Deters, restrains and /or arrests individuals attempting to impose physical harm to him/herself, others or commit criminal acts.
Completes necessary administrative forms/reports related to incidents and/or arrests, to include gathering pertinent information from participants and/or witnesses.
Occasionally assists Security Investigators and/or Inspectors to conduct investigations, or special projects as requested.
Maintains regular radio contact with communications center to clock-in, advise of any unusual situations and to request backup when necessary.
Appears in court regarding incidents that occur within the University community when necessary.
Provides crowd and/or traffic control during scheduled activities, or during emergency situations as necessary.
Observes and reports faulty and/or unsafe utility equipment, include insuring that fire and other safety precautions are in working order. Admits authorized personnel to locked buildings during security hours.
Provides Emergency First Aid and/or CPR to injured persons, or assists in the transportation of ill or injured persons when necessary.
Provides input to superiors on the performance of lower level officer.
Performs Public Safety and Emergency Medical dispatch duties when necessary which includes the requirement to maintain all required training certifications. Dispatch duties include monitoring the radio to evaluate the severity of transmissions and dispatching officers to calls for service, monitoring the alarm systems and dispatching units, as required.
